Had a great hunt this morning walking away with the best bag of the season. Added to the list was my first hate crime against a fellow ginger. Although the hunt was by far trumped by watching the pup work and stun my buddy. Started the morning sitting on a tank and had a few groups work us very early and were able to put down enough to walk away happy there. Pup worked good but standard work was performed there as he is getting the hang of the job. The fun really started when we drove down to jump a small creek nearby. I had to sit the pup a good 30 yards back from the edge of the creek where it dropped down an 8 foot bank. Spotted our birds which we found to be a good group of greys. Made our first shots on the water, of course thinking of giving the pup work just in case, and had 12 to 15 birds spring into flight. Folded a few more and was able to drop another shell to down one more drake on the other side of the creek. Pup made quick work of crips and birds out cold leaving the task of the kicker across the creek. As we lined up my buddy and I discussed all the different ways this retrieve was going to be difficult at best granted he was sat out of sight of the fall completely. Gave pup command as he leaps in clearing what seemed like half the creek. Tracked a dead straight line to the other bank and popped right out of the water, continued the line into the brush. Once he cleared a brush pile I whistle sat him and gave him a right cast where he was on the bird in no time flat. Back across back to heel while my buddy was trying to pull his jaw back off the ground. Both pleasantly surprised. That left us with one more crip in the brush we set after but were quickly distracted by a pair of woodies using the creek. Shots rang out clipping the bird sending the drake a good 50 yards down the creek. As we worked our way down the bank I hurried to gather the pup to go work up the downed bird only to find as we got up the hill he was already there tearing through the shallows snapping at it's tail feathers. At no fault to pup we didn't quite do our job leaving the woodie with enough wing to get up and out. Came back for a quick find on the last bird and took it to the house.
8 retrieves on the day, 46 ducks thus far in the season.
